Virginia car insurance reviews help consumers compare and select the best company to cover their vehicles. Although providing the lowest auto rates in Virginia is our ultimate goal, we also feel it’s important to know and understand the carrier you may be insured with. And just as importantly, it helps to know how others feel about different companies.
All of the companies we rated and reviewed offered a full package of coverages including rental reimbursement and emergency roadside service. Most discounts were similar although a few carriers offered single-parent, entire payment and occupational reductions. Each one had 24/7 claims help and a few could allow you to use an IPhone for filing a claim.
So…here’s our review of seven of the major auto insurance companies, with most of the information provided by you…the consumer!
Progressive, based in Ohio, is an established carrier that has been insuring customers since the 1940s. Virginians generally speak very highly about Progressive’s claim process and how quick and painless it is to file a claim. Progressive appears to go out of their way to provide an estimate wherever and when the customer is available. They have many “drop off” facilities where customers can leave their vehicle for an estimate.
Of course, rates are perhaps the most important factor in the decision-making process and their rates are usually very competitive, especially in the Southern part of the state. Policies can be purchased from more than 25,000 brokers in the US and free quotes are available on this website. The "Snapshot" program can potentially save money if you agree to its installation.
Geico is another company that has offered policies a lot longer than consumers realize (about 70 years). Most of their quoting is done online and quite easily and effectively. Policyholders can also monitor their claims status online and easily communicate with claims representatives. Also, a treasure chest of available discounts is available, often substantially reducing Virginia Geico car insurance premiums for those that qualify.
Geico was originally founded to insure government employees. However, with an extensive advertising budget and some of the best television commercials in the industry, Geico insures a broad range of vehicles and risks. Virginia residents tell us that they tend to keep their policies longer than other carriers and also appreciate the abundance of available discounts. Their online activity and advertising has increased over the last few years.
State Farm is considered by many to be the premier auto insurance company in the US (and Virginia), despite recent gains by Progressive, Geico and other insurers. Its agents seem to be more “hands on” than other company representatives, which we view as a positive. This could be due to the fact that they are more active in promoting and selling other lines of insurance, such as life, disability and medical (often through Assurant). They also offer financial planning, although often its best to use another source if you need that type of help.
Policyholders seem satisfied with State Farm and their claims process. However, if your own vehicle and are hit by another driver with State Farm, more delays seem to be reported. Overall, State Farm’s rates seem to be very attractive, although they have much more competition then they had 20-30 years ago. Their market share has also dropped. The main reason may be the increased number of available reputable carriers.
Nationwide is still on your side! They have come a long way from the days that they only insured farmers and ranchers in Ohio. Now, of course, they’re a major player in the auto and home insurance industry. They still have a strong focus on expediting and simplifying the claims process and local residents give them great marks for their efforts. There are many locations where you can take your vehicle and all repairs are guaranteed for life. That’s a nice feature!
Nationwide still maintains local offices in Virginia along with a strong online presence. To compete with companies like Esurance, they needed to be able to offer an easy way to get quotes online, and they have done that (See the Online Quote section at the top of this page). Regarding their rates, there seems to be a wide range of competitiveness, depending on which county you reside. But they are worthy of consideration in most areas and have very flexible "high risk" offers, especially in the Richmond area.
Esurance car insurance rates can also be obtained on our website. And they are a very different company. Although they are very new, they have caught up to the big companies relatively fast and are able to offer solid rates in most parts of the state. With Esurance, you view your quote online, you pick the coverages you want, you apply and then you print all of your materials, ID cards etc…on your printer! Of course, live persons are available if needed.
One feature drivers seem to like about Esurance, is the ability to easily personalize the type of benefits on your policy. No frills? Fine. “Cadillac” coverages and extra benefits? You can have that too. Also, since most of their operations are online, they are considered the ultimate “Green” company of the major auto insurance companies. If you need to make changes or additions, it is easily accomplished yourself or with the help of a broker.
Allstate, the ‘good hands” people, has offices all over the state. And although these offices are conveniently located for easy access, many folks seem to rank other insurers above them. They’re still in the top 20%, but perhaps not one of the three most popular carriers, based on our limited observation.
While they are still a very reputable company, and have a large block of business, their prices are typically not one of the two or three lowest in most areas. However, their “New Car Replacement” program (cars that are less than three years old are replaced new) is very popular. And by the way, Esurance is actually part of the Allstate family of companies.
Farmers Insurance (different from State Farm), has been in business almost a century, and they usually are fairly innovative with new ideas to serve customers. They offer a wide variety of discounts (as many as anybody) and although rates will fluctuate, they tend to be “in the ballpark” in most parts of the East and Midwest.
Geico and Progressive have certainly taken some of the bite out of Farmers, but this old established company still has many loyal customers and for good reason. They should always be considered when requesting your free Va car insurance quotes on this website. If you own additional rental properties, they offer key discounts that will reduce your premiums.
Of course, there are many other very reputable and reliable companies that we did not review. These companies will often have very worthwhile offers. A few examples are USAA, Liberty Mutual, AAA, Erie and Travelers. In fact, in selected situations, they may be one of the best choices.
