Virginia Car Insurance Companies offer a wide range of policy options in the state. Whether you need just the minimum liability requirements on your vehicle, or comprehensive coverage with low deductibles, we will help you find the right Va policy at the most affordable rate. Our reviews are completely unbiased and designed to show you the best fit for the vehicles you own.
We are very selective about which options in Virginia that we use in our quoting software. Prices, of course, are important, but other factors, such as quickness and fairness of settling claims, and financial safety of the carrier must be considered. Here are a few of the most popular carriers:
Typically, Geico earns top ratings from independent customer satisfaction evaluation services. Their rates are generally very competitive in Virginia and they are very easy to contact regarding claims. With more than 10 million customers in the US, they are the third largest car insurance company. And although “GEICO” stands for “Government Employees Insurance Company,” they will insure anyone in the private or public sector, including owners of TVs and RVs. Rates for their property coverage (homes, condos, and personal property) are also competitive.
Interestingly, they are a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett. Although a national company, Geico also maintains service centers in Fredericksburg and Virginia Beach. Their streamlined operation allows them to be very efficient, and pass the savings onto customers. They are also venturing into the ridesharing business, offering coverage to Uber drivers. Lfyt and Sidecar are also involved in the program. You can view additional details here.
Progressive not only has the best commercials in the industry, but their rates are pretty good too! Progressive, based in Cleveland, began selling insurance in 1937. Like most of the major companies, they also offer other products, such as homeowners, motorcycle, RV and watercraft coverage. Rental properties aren't available yet, but may be offered in the future. Online business is increasing, and market share has extended outside of the Midwest.
Innovations are not new to the Ohio-based company. Among some of their “firsts” are offering compensation resulting from injuries to pets in an accident, “Name Your Price” option, and the first auto insurance website in 1995. And a few years ago, they started offering "Snapshot," which is a device that attaches to your vehicle and tracks your driving habits. Based on the information it collects, you could see a significant reduction in what you pay.
Farmers Insurance Group is the country’s third biggest provider of auto and home policies. They have been around since 1928 and their rates are generally very competitive. Many local safety initiatives have been undertaken by Farmers including m.i.l.k. (missing information on lost kids) and “Farmers Identity Shield,” which helps families with identity theft, and “Y.E.S.,” (You’re Essential To Safety), a program that assists teen driving. Generally, agents are heavily involved in their local communities.
Depending on the county where you reside, their rate may be one of the most attractive or actually not competitive. It simply depends on where you live and their competitor's underwriting in that area. And of course, underwriting decisions and guidelines can change. Additional lines of business offered include business, accidental death, value term life and graded death benefit. You also may have noticed a substantial increase in their national advertising. So far, it has not impacted the rates Farmers charge.
Erie isn't a big company, and they don't advertise much. But their pricing is fairly low, and they have very flexible plan options that allow you to choose a combination of deductibles, liability limits and riders that fit your coverage and budget needs. Because of lower expenses than most other carriers, and a simplified claims process, Erie pricing is very attractive in many areas of the state. Covering your home with Erie will generate a discount that also reduces the homeowner's rate.
They actually have offered policies since 1925 although they only offer coverage in 12 states. Of course, that allows them to better focus on how to provide a superior product to their limited market share. Home, life and commercial business liability coverage is also offered. With an A+ rating from A.M. Best Company, safety and reliability is not an issue. They also earn high marks for paying claims on a timely basis. Market share is higher in other states.
You know the saying. “You’re in good hands with Allstate.” Usually, Allstate premiums are very good and they treat customers well. And they also treat their employees well, judging from numerous awards and recognition they have received from “Fortune” and “Working Mother” magazines, and other organizations. However, Esurance, an Allstate affiliate, provides a more competitive option in many areas.
By entering your zip code at the top of the page, you will be able to view Allstate’s offer. Like all of the other companies, your zip code will be one of the factors that determine your rate. Bundling your home with them will make a big difference.
Elephant is a very large company, as you may have guessed by the name! Although most of their current business is written in Britain for their parent company (Admiral Group), they are becoming much more active here in US. Operations are expanding, and they offer low-cost policies in many areas of the state. With policyholders in four different countries and many other US states, they are in an expansive mood.
Although Elephant does not have the lowest rates in all areas of Virginia, in many multi-car households, they offer great pricing with several fairly unique deductible combinations. They also guarantee your premium will not change during the first 12 months you are covered.
USAA historically offers some of the most competitive pricing in Va. However, not everyone is eligible for a policy since you must be a member of the military (active or retired). Although they feature attractive rates in most areas, USAA is very popular in Roanoke, Richmond, and Alexandria. Customer satisfaction is very high with USAA.
A large financial services complex is located in Hampton Roads where they offer additional products, such as notary services, establishing a checking and/or savings account, and basic financial planning. USAA manages their own 529 plan (for your children's college expenses) and advices members of the military about the financial impact of deployment and military separation.
State Farm is one of the nation’s oldest companies and offers more than 100 products. Through a strong selection of discounts, their rates are typically “in the ballpark” when comparing to other carriers. And once again, depending upon where you live, you could see a substantial savings when comparing premiums.
State Farm is also working with the University of Virginia with some of their athletic events, so you may see some local advertising at games in Charlottesville.
Travelers started writing policies in 1864. They have been insuring automobiles since 1897 and provide Virginia drivers with a wide array of policy choices. They are also one of the industry leaders in battling insurance fraud.
Travelers is one of the most respected Va companies and traditionally, their rates in many areas of the state are very attractive. And like many carriers, there may be a large difference in their premiums, depending on many factors, including driving record and credit score.
To view the lowest available rates from each company, simply enter your zip code in the box near the top of the page. Of course, there are no charges for the use of our service and all quotes are free.
March 3 2015 - Although not highlighted in this article, Elephant has been slowly gaining market share in the state. Last month, they partnered with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) to sponsor the new "VCUFanHouse" app. Elephant is based in Richmond and the parent company Admiral Group has a long history of supporting local sports teams. Free tickets are still available although not for the upcoming conference or NCAA Tournament.
